Elon Musk reveals Starship progress ahead of first orbital flight of Mars-bound craft

Don t show me this message again✕ SpaceX tycoon Elon Musk has shared a picture of his latest Starship prototype, the SN16, which is being readied for the project’s biggest test yet: the first orbital flight of a Mars-bound ship, due for blast off in July. The towering 50-metre-long stainless steel craft is seen in a hangar at Mr Musk’s Starbase facility at Boca Chica in Cameron County, Texas, its sci-fi nose cone and fins cast against the night sky. Starship’s development brings the Tesla billionaire closer to realising his dream of landing an astronaut on the hostile surface of Mars this decade, with a view to ultimately colonising the Red Planet and even constructing cities among its craters by 2050, a project that has already seen him secure a multi-billion dollar contract with Nasa.

Lockheed Martin, GM to develop GenNext rover for Nasa mission

Lockheed Martin, GM to develop GenNext rover for Nasa mission DENVER (US), 3 hours, 57 minutes ago Global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin is teaming up with General Motors to develop the next generation of lunar vehicles to transport astronauts on the surface of the Moon, fundamentally evolving and expanding humanity s deep-space exploration footprint.   Nasa s Artemis programme is sending humans back to the Moon where they will explore and conduct scientific experiments using a variety of rovers.    Nasa sought industry approaches to develop a Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) that will enable astronauts to explore the lunar surface farther than ever before. The LTV is the first of many types of surface mobility vehicles needed for Nasa s Artemis programme.

PHOTO: TopGear.com General Motors and Lockheed Martin are getting together to build a new lunar rover for NASA’s ‘Artemis’ program. The first crewed mission to the Moon is set for 2024, and by the end of this decade, the program ought to have established a “sustainable presence” on the Moon to, among other things, help prepare for future missions to Mars. Last year, NASA asked companies to submit ideas for a “human-rated, unpressurized (unenclosed) rover that will be used to help astronauts explore and conduct experiments somewhere humans have never been before: the lunar South Pole.” GM and Lockheed Martin’s announcement is effectively the two companies bidding for the contract to supply these ‘lunar terrain vehicles’ (LTVs) to the Artemis program.
