NEW DELHI: A record number of 27 representatives of OBCs have been included in the Modi ministry, a significant political move which reduces the gap between their share in power at the Centre with that of all the “unreserved” categories put together.
The decision, keeping in mind the coming UP polls and well-known plans of principal opponents SP and BSP to engineer social coalitions to take on BJP, also removes one oddity about the Modiled BJP. While Narendra Modi in 2014 pulled off the feat of being the first OBC politician to have won a mandate in a plebiscitary contest in which his social background was very much in play, his pre-eminence did not lead to diminution of the prominence of the upper castes in the new regime. The PM has opted for more youth with the average age of the council of ministers down to 58 from 61 after this expansion exercise. He has increased the number of women in his council to 11. Significantly, he has also focused on bringing in a large number of lower and middle caste ministers, possibly keeping in mind upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh and later, Gujarat.
One of the most significant political entries into the cabinet was that of BJP general secretary Bhupendra Yadav (R). His elevation has been a long time coming, having been talked about in previous reshuffles as well.

LUCKNOW: With an eye on the 2022 Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inducted a maximum seven new ministers from Uttar Pradesh in the Union Council of Ministers. Knowing well that the non-Yadav OBC and non-Jatav Scheduled Castes (SC) had played an integral role in BJP’s historic 312 seats in 2017, the Wednesday’s Cabinet expansion kept in mind addressing the caste arithmetic of UP, as barring one new minister, Ajay Kumar Mishra ‘Teni,’ all others hailed from the OBC or the SC segment.
