Updating the Steelers salary cap after signing 8 draft picks - Behind the Steel Curtain

Handout Photo-USA TODAY Sports The Pittsburgh Steelers now have 89 players under contract for the 2021 offseason. The only player remaining is third-round draft pick Kendrick Green who is yet to sign his rookie deal. With the announcement of Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth signing their contracts this week, along with numbers finally coming in for the salary for Arthur Maulet, it’s time to update the Steelers’ salary cap space First, Arthur Maulet is yet another player who qualifies under the veterans salary benefit. Set to make $990k for 2021, only $850k will count towards the salary cap. With Maulet displacing James Pierre out of the top 51 and his cap hit of $783k, he only counts $67k against the salary cap.

Updating the Steelers salary cap after signing 6 draft picks - Behind the Steel Curtain

Handout Photo-USA TODAY Sports The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed all of their draft picks from the fourth round on from the 2021 NFL draft. Because their top three picks have yet to be signed, two of the six players currently fall in the top 51 salaries for the Steelers. Since that is the case, it’s a great time to give a salary cap update. The salary cap numbers and contracts for all players drafted by the Steelers have been previously known. Even the contracts for the players who have yet to sign as well as those already under contract can be seen here:

Updating the Steelers salary cap after re-signing Vince Williams

Photo by: 2019 Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images As contract numbers come in, it is my job here at Behind The Steel Curtain to bring you the most up-to-date salary cap number I can give. After waiting patiently for almost a week, reports have finally surfaced for Vince Williams’ one-year deal with the Steelers. This per Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. $4M. $7M was cap hit. Still, that’s a guy who is playing for love of the game and not the money. Mark Kaboly (@MarkKaboly) April 20, 2021 As you can see, Kaboly had to correct his original tweet to reflect Vince Williams’ salary instead of his cap hit. The Steelers were able to take $4 million off the books in March when they released Vince Williams, but it ultimately only saved them $3.34 million because of roster displacement. By signing Williams back, they displacement pretty much goes away although now Williams is bumping a player who has a higher salary than what took his place in March.

Updating the Steelers defensive depth chart 2 weeks before the draft

Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to shape their 2021 roster, some things become a little more clear as others still have plenty of questions. Looking specifically at the defensive side of the ball, the Steelers have added two players with NFL experience since the last update. After adding defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson, the Steelers have brought back linebacker Vince Williams a month after he was a salary cap casualty. While the upcoming NFL draft will help fill out the various needs, let’s look at the Steelers defensive depth chart by position in order to give a better grasp on where the Steelers need to add pieces. Although the Steelers retained a large portion of their practice squad and signed others to Reserve/Futures contracts, we will be focusing for now on just those players who spent significant time on the Steelers 53-man roster in 2020 and anyone added from other teams who has appeared in NFL games.
