Sagaia Kaisala died after being run over in Māngere Bridge while trying to help a woman being attacked by her husband, the court has heard. Oji Fibre Solutions facility manager David Gray told the court he was in his office when he was alerted to a possible stabbing. He grabbed his high-visibility vest and made his way down to the scene. Matamua looked “agitated and was pacing back and forth, holding a bandage to her neck, Gray told the court. “There was so much commotion, I made the decision to call 111.” He asked people to get away from the gate and at that point he heard a vehicle “rev up” and accelerate rapidly down the street.

She then heard a car “going really fast” and saw a man be hit by the car. That man was Abdul Riyaz who previously told the court he confronted Niumagumagu worried he was going to attack Matamua again.
