Abia govt declares December 18 public holiday - Daily Post Nigeria

Daily Post Nigeria Published The Abia State Government has declared Friday, December 18, 2020, a public holiday due to the forthcoming local government elections holding in the state. The state’s Honorable Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, made this known in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday. According to him, movement of persons and goods shall be restricted within the state from midnight of Thursday, 17th December, 2020. He however, revealed that only staff of Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), security agents, media practitioners and others on essential duties will be exempted from the restrictions. He also urged citizens and visitors to ensure that they maintain peace, law and order before, during and after the election.

Views: Visits 16 Citizens with disabilities have urged states to enact laws to remove barriers that hinder them from enjoying equal rights as citizens rather than being discriminated against and marginalized on the basis of their disabilities. The Executive Director of the Center For Citizens With Disabilities (CDD), Mr David Anyaele, who made the call in Umuahia Abia state capital commended the federal government under president Muhammadu Buhari for enacting the disabilities law and also setting up a Commission to implement its provisions. Anyaele decried that only about ten states have enacted this law noting that in the case of Abia, the bill has been undergoing legislative processes.

BREAKING: Court vacates order stopping Abia LGA election

Daily Post Nigeria Published A High Court in Abia State, Thursday, vacated the order restraining the Abia State Independent National Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, from conducting December 18th local government election across the wards in the seventeen LGA of the state. Recall that Justice Agwu Umah Kalu-led High Court in Aba division had issued a a restraining order against the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, from continuing to demand N480,000 from all Chairmanship candidates and N145,000 from all Councillorship candidates for forms pending the determination of the motion on notice. The court also restrained ABSIEC from excluding candidates of the All Progressive Congress, APC, from participating in the forthcoming Local Government election on the ground of non-payment of the fees it imposed or any other ground not supported by law whatsoever pending the determination of the motion on notice.
