The last time Chicago had a plan, Gunsmoke aired on Saturday nights Time for a new one

Rich Hein/Sun-Times file It hasn’t gotten much attention as the city wrestles these days with crime, the economy and a pandemic, but the Lightfoot administration wants to create a long-term citywide plan to address a host of issues from neighborhood redevelopment to public safety. Called “We Will Chicago,” the plan aims to physically improve the city while addressing social and economic problems that have for decades impaired growth and the quality of life particularly on the South and West sides. Editorials It would be Chicago’s first citywide comprehensive plan since 1966. “In a city that has an economy the size of a country like Switzerland, we can’t continue to be separated by race and by class,” city Planning Department Commissioner Maurice Cox said during a 90-minute livestream update about the plan Thursday. “Opportunity has to be pervasive throughout the city.”

San Mateo County hopes to slow Pescadero Creek Road speeders

Last week, the San Mateo County Department of Public Works completed the first phase of a speed reduction plan on Pescadero Creek Road. The plan targets the portion of Pescadero Creek Road between the fire station and North Street and aims to slow motorists as they enter town from the east and the west. In addition to the replacement and relocation of existing speed limit signs, the plan adds several new “35 mph” signs and thermoplastic legends — essentially the white markings you see on pavement — to the portion of road. “We’re going to install these speed limit signs and the numeric pavement markings and evaluate its effectiveness,” said Director of Public Works Jim Porter. “And based upon that, if it slows cars down, then that’ll be the solution.”

Heavy rain prompts South Coast evacuations

The South Coast avoided mudslides this week after an “atmospheric river” of heavy rain and high winds threatened the area recently burned in the CZU Lightning Complex fire.  Early last week, officials began warning South Coast residents to prepare for evacuations due to reports of heavy rain to come. By Jan. 26, the evacuation warnings were upgraded to orders. A temporary evacuation shelter was established at Pescadero High School, where around 80 evacuees were put up in hotels, according to Red Cross spokesman Jim Burns. South Coast Community Emergency Response Team members were on the ground prior to the event, going door to door to tell people to get out.
