David Swensen

Dear Members of the Yale Community, I write with profound sadness to share the news that David Swensen, Yale’s chief investment officer, died yesterday evening after a long and courageous battle with cancer. David served our university with distinction. He was an exceptional colleague, a dear friend, and a beloved mentor to many in our community. Future generations will benefit from his dedication, brilliance, and generosity. After receiving his Ph.D. in economics from Yale in 1980, David worked for Salomon Brothers and Lehman Brothers before returning to Yale in 1985 to lead our investments office. With his guidance, Yale’s endowment yielded returns that established him as a legend among institutional investors. Over the years, he lectured in Yale College and the School of Management. Scholars For Reform Sends Open Letter to U S Senate Urging Filibuster Reform

Dear Members of the Senate, We are historians, political scientists, and other scholars who study the Senate, American government, American history, and the challenges facing our democracy. With critics of the filibuster advancing arguments for its reform, we write to you with the hope that a shared understanding of this parliamentary procedure, including its history and its implications for our system of government, can better inform discussion. We believe that procedural reform can strengthen the core functions of the Senate as envisioned both by the Framers of our Constitution and by generations of Americans as well as sustain Americans’ faith in democracy. As public trust in our democratic institutions declines precipitously, we also write to you with a sense of great urgency.

Dear Members of the New European Bauhaus collective, Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you very much for the invitation! It s an honor for me to open this first event of the New European Bauhaus collective. I am very happy to have such a strong, diverse and competent group of organisations and people that support the New European Bauhaus initiative. With the creation of this collective you did exactly what we had in mind when we launched the project: Bringing together people from different backgrounds and disciplines. Not only to amplify good ideas, but also to create a better future for Europe and our planet.

A New Acronym

Dear Members of the Baylor College of Medicine Community, Today, I want to focus my message on two populations; young adults who are not yet vaccinated, and people – young and old – who have already had COVID-19, but do not feel like they are fully recovered. Last week, I attempted to debunk this myth: I am young, COVID-19 won t hurt me, I don t need to be vaccinated . To review from last week, looking at the simplest and easiest to define of outcome measures – mortality – the rate of death in young adults is much lower than those more senior, but it is not inconsequential. Happily, the risk is almost entirely preventable with vaccination and safe practices.
