Good morning. I’m Paul Thornton, and it is Saturday, May 8, 2021. One year ago today, in what felt like a huge relief at the time, Los Angeles County hiking trails reopened after a weeks-long closure; since then, a lot more has reopened. Let’s take a look back at the week in Opinion.
Amid all the talk of late about life returning to normal, one thing remains stubbornly off: the drought, which is bad enough in Los Angeles but perilously worse in much of the state, especially in parts of Northern California that appear primed for another record wildfire season. But don’t take what you are about to read at face value, and certainly do not take comfort in it: There is, in fact, no drought.

SAN FRANCISCO Between November 2019 and November 2020 there were: 42% more burglaries, 34% more cars being stolen, and 39% more arsons San Francisco. The quality of life crimes tolerance for drug use, public defecation, aggressive panhandling, etc. have dirtied the once beautiful city. Moreover, in the wake of the pandemic, people are fleeing to other states to get away from the Bay-area mess. Nevertheless, these issues do not phase San Francisco’s mayor, as a few days ago they declared they were going to move $3.75 million in funding from the police department and redirect it to black businesses instead, the Post Millennial reported.

May 7 Sacramento police arrested one of their officers Thursday on two felony counts of filing a false police report, part of a massive internal investigation that began last July at a gas station near Discovery Park.
The police department said in a brief announcement Thursday afternoon that it had arrested Alexa Palubicki, 26, after being alerted to potential problems by other officers, and Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert s office filed two felony counts in the case late Thursday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney Paris Coleman announced his candidacy for Sacramento County District Attorney.
Endorsed by outgoing DA Anne Marie Schubert, Coleman launched his campaign on Thursday, saying he was running on his track record as an “experienced bridge builder” who is committed to making Sacramento “safe for everyone.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Sacramento Police say an officer is looking at felony charges for allegedly filing a false police report.
Alexa Palubicki, 26, was arrested and placed on administrative leave as soon as the department learned of her alleged misconduct, officials said.
According to investigators, Palubicki’s fellow officers first brought the information to the attention of the department in July 2020.
“Once the Sacramento Police Department was alerted to the dishonesty, the department launched a thorough audit of all arrests and associated supplemental reports submitted by Palubicki over the course of her three-year employment,” the police department wrote in a press r
