The Spring 2021 College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) 67 nursing candidates for graduation celebrated their achievements May 12 when they attended their nursing recognition and pinning ceremony. It is a time-honored ceremony that has CSM faculty welcoming their students as peers and colleagues in the field of nursing.
Like much of their last year together – the cohort gathered in a virtual environment – this time to share the tradition that included speeches, photo collages and offering of the CSM Nursing pin.
CSM Professor Robin Madera spoke first about the importance and history of the CSM nursing pin. She explained how the modern pinning ceremony dates to the 1860s, when Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of St. George in recognition for her tireless service to the injured during the Crimean War. Governor Larry Hogan announced an additional $192.9 million in funding has been awarded to local governments and service providers through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. These federal funds will support local Maryland Eviction Prevention Partnership initiatives that assist tenants whose ability to pay rent has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The governor also announced that the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will reopen its Assisted Housing Relief Program, which provides rental assistance to tenants in properties financed by the department.

On Sunday, May 9, 2021, at approximately 3:30 p.m., park staff reported that two individuals were clinging to an overturned SeaDoo, a personal watercraft. Corporal Robinson kept a lookout on land while Officer Gukanovich responded with his patrol boat on water.
While racing to the victims, Officer Gukanovich was met with 20+ mph south winds and 2-3 foot waves. As he got closer, he observed the two teens in the water struggling to stay afloat.
One of the teens became overpowered by the waves and began to inhale water; Gukanovich knew that time was of the essence. Thinking quickly, Officer Gukanovich tossed a rope to both of the victims and pulled them to the side of his patrol vessel. He then brought them safely onboard.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) is announcing new guidance for customers whose driver’s licenses, permits, registrations and related products have expired during the Maryland COVID-19 State of Emergency.
