Why doesn’t UVic have more buildings named after women?

If you haven’t been on campus recently, you may not have noticed that the University Centre has been renamed. Now known as the Jamie Cassels Centre, after the previous president whose term ended in October 2020, the building is a stark reminder that there just aren’t many buildings at UVic named after women. In this case, the term ‘buildings’ refers to establishments with classrooms, research labs, or auditoriums, not residences. Although there is a good percentage of residences named after women compared to other buildings at UVic, residences are not as commonly interacted with by students. UVic has 86 listings on their building directory. Of those 86, 36 are named after people. Only eight include a woman’s name. Of those eight, five are residences.

Christmas plans are in tatters for hundreds of Adver readers after new restrictions were announced. Yesterday, PM Boris Johnson announced the Christmas relaxation of Covid rules will be limited to Christmas Day only rather than the previously announced five days. This means that up to three households can meet indoors, but only on December 25. Coupled with the new Tier 4 restrictions in London and the South East - meaning people cannot mix no matter what, even on Christmas Day, and cannot leave the area - means many people have had their festive plans thrown into disarray. We asked readers on Facebook how their Christmas plans were impacted and more than 300 got in touch to share their stories. Hundreds shared their disappointment. At the same time many took a pragmatic view and said they were happy to wait until it was safe for families to get together again.
