Japanese-style blossoming tree circles will brighten up Britain s greyest cities under plans by government ministers and the National Trust.
Newcastle, Nottingham and Plymouth have been among the urban areas earmarked for mass tree-planting schemes, in order to emulate the Hanami cherry blossom craze which sees hundreds of thousands visit Japan every spring.
Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said the government supports the scheme and that the aim is for British cities to bloom like Japan.
The charity has consulted with residents to choose the British trees with the best blossom, and settled on cherry, plum, hawthorn and crab apple.
