At the end of the long and grueling football season, a Virginia Tech Hokie sits atop the mountain as a Super Bowl champion.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by former Virginia Tech quarterback Bruce Arians, defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV to become world champions for the second time in franchise history.
The story of the game was legendary quarterback Tom Brady winning his seventh Super Bowl ring and first with the Buccaneers.
Brady was outstanding, but a lot of credit should also go to the defense and defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles. Bowles’ defense features a pair of former Hokies in prominent roles.
Copied!
The Chiefs Travis Kelce called the toss at midfield opposite Buccaneers Lavonte David as the visitor. Kelce called heads and the coin was flipped heads, winning the Chiefs the toss as they elected to defer to start Super Bowl LV. It meant Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay offense got the first chance of the game.
The Bucs opened with a play action pass to wide receiver Chris Godwin. It was complete but only resulted in a gain of one. Faced with third-and-seven on the series, the Bucs would surrender their first possession with a punt with 13:33 to go in the first quarter.
