2021/04/10 08:51 NEW YORK (AP) No charges will be filed against five New York City police officers who in 2019 opened fire while another officer and an armed man struggled on the grounds of a Bronx housing project, prosecutors said Friday. The barrage of gunfire from both NYPD Officer Brian Mulkeen and his fellow officers, unleashed within eight seconds, left both 27-year-old Antonio Williams and Mulkeen himself dead. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said the officers had been justified in approaching Williams and firing more than a dozen rounds after the man reached for a loaded revolver. A 71-page report released Friday concluded Williams was shot several times and died from a round Mulkeen fired that entered his heart. Mulkeen died “as the result of a gunshot fired by at least one of his fellow officers,” the report said.

The situation escalated from there, as the seven-year veteran of the force fired his gun five times at the man they had chased down, Antonio Williams. Mulkeen’s partner, whose bodycam footage was seen in a previously released video, then drew his weapon as well before both Williams and Mulkeen are killed in the gunfire.
Police said a total of six plainclothes officer fired 15 shots when they responded to the call, with Mulkeen being killed as a result of friendly fire to his head and torso, the medical examiner later ruled. Police recovered a handgun from the suspect at the scene following the fatal incident, but it was loaded and never fired during the melee.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The Bronx District Attorney has cleared police officers of wrongdoing in the 2019 fatal shootings of an NYPD detective and an armed suspect.
It happened during a stop in the Edenwald section.
The report found that during a struggle, Detective Brian Mulkeen fatally shot 27-year-old Antonio Williams as they struggled on the ground.
The report says in the moments that followed, at least one fellow NYPD officer mistakenly shot and killed Mulkeen.
The investigation did not find criminal conduct in the use of deadly physical force by the officers involved.
