CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson Volleyball Head Coach Jackie Simpson-Kirr announced the hiring of Taylor Unroe as the program’s Associate Head Coach on Friday. Unroe, who was a standout libero at the University of Florida, brings a wealth of coaching experience after stints at Memphis, Mississippi State, High Point and George Mason. Unroe will serve as Clemson’s recruiting coordinator and spearhead the Tigers’ efforts defensively and in serve-receive. “I am thrilled to have Taylor join our staff,” said Simpson-Kirr. “She is a transformative leader that truly cares for the well-being of the student-athletes she works with. Even with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Hawaiâi in the NCAA Tournament semifinals that saw their incredible run come to an end, the UC Santa Barbara menâs volleyball team had a year to remember, as they had one of the most successful seasons in program history as winners of the Big West Championship for the first time in school history.Â
The Gauchos finished the regular season holding the No. 2 seed in the Big West rankings with a 13-4 record, while only losing three conference games the entire season. UCSB continued their success into the postseason, defeating Long Beach State and UC San Diego en route to the Big West Championship. The Gauchos had one more victory in the tank as they defeated Pepperdine 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to their conference rival and eventual NCAA champion Hawaiâi. Â

“I’m so happy I was able to win the award,” Grimes told reporters on Wednesday afternoon during a Zoom meeting. “All credit goes to coach Sampson, my teammates, (just) pushing us every day, coming to work, and just putting me in the best position possible.”
Grimes is the first UH player to win conference player of the year honors since Bo Outlaw in 1993. These players are two of just seven that have won this honor in program history. The other five are Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Michael Young, Rob Williams and Otis Birdsong.
