This week on Thursday’s @ Three, Christa Wessel welcomes Northwest Piano Trio. Founded in fall 2014 and based in Portland, OR, the trio is committed to the performance of traditional classical music while also exploring the music of 20th and 21st century composers. WKMS Ohio Valley Resource Reporter/Assistant News Director Liam Niemeyer recently won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association, or RTDNA, the world s largest professional organization devoted to broadcast and digital journalism.
The winning story focused on a Kentucky town in a moment of reckoning over its racist past. Niemeyer won the Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category for his December 11, 2020, piece “A Blackface Photo Resurfaces, And A Kentucky Town Confronts Its Racial Trauma.”
Niemeyer’s story was based on a Paducah, Kentucky, school official who appeared in blackface as part of a Halloween costume. But rather than make the school official the main focus, Niemeyer framed his story within the context of the larger Black community experience in Paducah. Boston-based concert pianist Miki Sawada will tour across Massachusetts with a piano in tow from May 6 – May 30 as part of the Gather Hear Tour. Sawada will perform for free in 13 towns and cities across the state, presented by various small businesses, non-profit organizations and city entities – with one stop in Chelsea Square.
The concert in Chelsea will be at Chelsea Square on May 13 at 6 p.m., presented by Chelsea Prospers. All concerts will take place outdoors and masks are required. For the Chelsea Square show attendees are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket.
Through the Gather Hear Tour, Sawada is on a mission to perform in all 50 states, inspiring human connection across political and socioeconomic divides.
