+ May 17, 2021 THE University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (PGH) will resume its full operations Tuesday, May 18, two days after suspending admissions due to a fire that hit a portion of its building Sunday.
The fire broke out near the hospital’s operating rooms before dawn Sunday, May 16, prompting staff and responders to evacuate the patients.
Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, the PGH medical director, said in a press briefing that the fire has not directly affected the hospital’s Covid-19 facilities, but he asked for a one-day reprieve (May 17) to prepare for the resumption of operations by Tuesday.

Updated May 16, 2021 10:23am The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) said its emergency room will be temporarily closed and no admissions will be accommodated on Sunday after a fire occurred before dawn. Pakiusap po muna, sarado ang PGH ng pag-admit ng kahit ano. Sarado ang ER ng PGH starting today, the hospital s spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said in an interview on Dobol B TV. (We appeal for understanding. PGH will be closed for admission of any case. PGH ER will be closed starting today.)
Fire broke out at the third floor of the hospital s Central Block Building past 12 a.m. and it was put out at 5:41 a.m.

“Ang amin pong pakiusap muna ngayon, sarado ang PGH ng pag-admit ng kahit ano. Sarado ang ER ng PGH starting today. Marami po kaming pasyente na nilagay muna namin sa emergency room (We are appealing to the public, PGH is closed for admission today. We transferred a lot of patients in the emergency room),” PGH Spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said in an interview with DZBB.
Del Rosario added that some patients, particularly infant and pediatric patients, were transferred to other hospitals.
“Nilabas namin. Yung iba nasa chapel, nasa driveway, nasa quadrangle ng PGH, nasa corridor. Yung mga sanggol, bagong panganak syempre kailangan sila nasa nursery, inilipat namin yung labindalawang babies sa Sta. Ana Hospital tapos meron po kaming ilang pediatric patients na nailipat na rin sa private hospitals (We evacuated them. Some are in the chapel, in the quadrangle of the PGH, in the corridor.
