How will the pandemic shape the future of live performances?
One possible answer comes from a new partnership between GBH and the German classical music streaming service IDAGIO, which seeks to bring original classical music performances to listenersâ screens across the globe.
The freshly minted deal will present audiences with a series of five video concerts over the next several months that feature well-known classical musicians performing at GBHâs Fraser Performance Studio. The series, dubbed âPerformance Reimagined,â will stream to IDAGIOâs Global Concert Hall and subsequently be available on-demand for a limited time.

Welcome back to HomeFront, where the doors that have been slightly ajar are flying open to let normal life back in. If youâre not at least partly vaccinated, you probably know someone who is, and maybe youâve had a meal on a patio. You might even have received an e-mail about reopening procedures at a place you used to go all the time. We canât shake the feeling that became our constant companion early in the stay-at-home period: that itâs safer on the couch than out in the world. Luckily we have plenty of company, virtually if not physically. And almost everyone needs something to watch or listen to. The Globeâs experts have plenty of suggestions.

Esther Nelson will step down from her position as general and artistic director of Boston Lyric Opera at the end of this season, the company announced Wednesday. Yo-Yo Ma visited Paranal Observatory in northern Chile in 2019 to perform a concert.Austin Mann
On March 8, 2020, Yo-Yo Ma was at Carnegie Hall giving a chamber music performance with two old friends, the pianist Emanuel Ax and the violinist Leonidas Kavakos. All three soloists travel constantly, and they were thrilled to be reunited. Hugs flew freely that day; neither Ma nor Kavakos had quite gotten their minds around the public health emergency about to descend. They noticed Ax, who had recently been to Italy â then ground zero of the pandemic â was being curiously generous with his applications of Purell.
After the concert, a scientist friend âread us the riot actâ about taking coronavirus seriously, Ma says. Despite being the most famous classical musician on the planet, he frequently takes Amtrak between New York and Boston, en route to his Cambridge home. Yet the day after the concert, he and his wife traveled home by car.
