Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs opposes pulling cops out from schools

View Comments County Mayor Glenn Jacobs will have a figurative seat at the table when the Knox County School Board meets Wednesday to figure out how to bring the community into discussions about policing in schools. Jacobs surprised the board last week with a letter to chair Susan Horn saying he is strongly against hiring a facilitator to organize conversations spurred by the police shooting of student Anthony Thompson Jr. at Austin-East Magnet High School in April. After weeks of intense discussions, board members had determined the best way forward was to hire a facilitator who would create a process to hear what community stakeholders have to say. A facilitator could navigate challenges as varied as when and where to hold sessions to how to bring together sharply divided stakeholders.

Stanley Freeman Jr s family gathers for his 17th birthday at grave

We should ve been at the beach. It would ve been his first time. Had it not been for the tragic afternoon of Feb. 12 when gunmen opened fire on Stanley Freeman Jr. as he was leaving his Knoxville high school, he would be spending his 17th birthday on the shores of Panama City Beach, Florida. Instead, his family gathered Friday at his gravesite to lay a blanket full of his childhood photos with his big, bright smile over his resting place. Together, they tried to make sense of his sudden loss.  In the three months since his passing, Stanley Freeman s family says they have become closer than ever, leaning on each other to cope with the devastating grief. They re working to keep alive the memory of a teen who worked hard at everything he did but was killed in what police say was a case of mistaken identity.

Talk, tears but not much progress Painful reality, police killings come to mind with anniversary of George Floyd s death

Final Call News by Barrington M. Salmon and Naba’a Muhammad The Final Call @TheFinalCall As the first anniversary of George Floyd’s murder approached, Blacks and others reflected demands made since May 25, 2020, the day the 46-year-old Black man was murdered by a White cop as onlookers screamed for him to stop kneeling on a dying man’s neck—and even videotaped his crime. What has happened after calls for change from millions who took to the streets night and day for months after Mr. Floyd’s untimely death? they asked. Most troubling, activists and advocates say, is in the midst of unprecedented social unrest and sustained pressure on law enforcement, the number of Blacks killed and injured by cops across the United States has continued unabated.
