A guide to Ho Chi Minh City for digital nomads

A guide to Ho Chi Minh City for digital nomads Joe Bindloss 11 January 2021 There s been a tech boom in Ho Chi Minh City © Nguyen Quang Ngoc Tonkin / Shutterstock While Hanoi rocks, Ho Chi Minh City is rolling on a wave of tech development. Skyscrapers are shooting up and tech start-ups are appearing on every corner. There’s even a self-styled Saigon Silicon City, under construction in District 9 in the eastern suburbs. So it s no surprise many digital nomads are looking towards Vietnam s biggest city to make a home base. Editor s note: during COVID-19 there are restrictions on travel. Check the latest guidance before departure, and always follow local health advice.

Kidnapped Canadians in China Spark Christmas Card Campaign

Kidnapped Canadians in China Spark Christmas Card Campaign 24 Dec 2020 A former British diplomat has started a campaign to send Christmas cards to two Canadians imprisoned in China. Charles Parton, a former envoy to Beijing for the E.U., says he hopes to pressure the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to release the two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, and generally raise awareness about their situation. Chinese authorities arrested Kovrig and Spavor in Beijing in March 2019. Many observers view their arrest, allegedly for spying, as retaliation for Chinese citizen Meng Wanzhou’s arrest by Canadian police in Vancouver in December 2018. Meng is the Chief Financial Officer of China’s state-owned telecom giant Huawei. She was detained by Canadian authorities at the request of U.S. government officials and has been under house arrest since then while her extradition case plays out in Canadian courts.

A Merry Christmas to Canadians jailed in China

Dec 23, 2020 Two Canadians incarcerated in China can definitely do with some Christmas cheer this month, more than two years after they were seized, seemingly in retaliation for the arrest in Vancouver of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei Technologies’ chief financial officer, in response to a United States request for extradition on bank fraud charges. The Chinese government has denied any connection between the two cases, even though its officials have hinted broadly that the two Canadians former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor could well be released if Canada allowed Meng to return home. China stands guilty in the eyes of many of the heinous offense of hostage diplomacy.
