Edward Tivnan: The return of a Worcester native (to check out Polar Park)

Edward Tivnan: The return of a Worcester native (to check out Polar Park) Edward Tivnan It was 1950, and I was a 5-year old playing catch with my father in Vernon Hill Park, a short walk from our apartment in a Windham Street three-decker. A young guy greeted my dad who advised me to “shake the hand of a minor league ballplayer.” I don’t remember his name or team, but I’ve never forgotten that he promised to bring me a team cap – and never delivered. I’m here to report that I finally received my minor league cap – from the Worcester Red Sox. This is a miracle, not just because a Triple-A ball club is now headquartered within walking distance of Vernon Hill Park. The WooSox will also lure thousands of Worcester natives living in distant parts back home to experience the new, more confident Worcester.

Getting Cozy With Cannabis at Home During the Holidays With Kendal Norris

This holiday season will be lonely or different for many as the COVID-19 pandemic forces us to celebrate from a distance. And while a year off from holiday work parties may be welcome, staying in the spirit solo gets harder as Christmas and Hanukkah get closer. Kendal Norris is used to creating seasonal vibes for crowds at her Mason Jar events, but she knows how to bring the party home, too. Known for pairing local cannabis products, chefs and music to reflect the time of year, Norris is hosting virtual Mason Jar events during the pandemic. She always has a few tips ready for a tasteful holiday celebration, with or without cannabis, so we asked the party planner extraordinaire how to get the most out of winter and weed smoke at home.

Steve McQueen on the small screen | Apollo Magazine

In the first two episodes of Steve McQueen’s quintet of films, collectively titled Small Axe, the artist and film-maker points his lens at two distinct but related spaces of Black social pleasure: a Caribbean restaurant in Notting Hill in the late 1960s, and a house party in the same area a decade later. Both of these are, to varying degrees, embattled, from without and within. The first film , Mangrove, takes its title from the historic Mangrove Restaurant, established on All Saints Road in 1968 by the community activist Frank Crichlow. It tells the story of the ‘Mangrove Nine’, a group of activists who led protests over the campaign of racist harassment against the restaurant by local police. In 1970 they were charged with incitement to riot, which led to a landmark 55-day trial.
