Oscar week is upon us, and Alabama has a chance to add to its long history of winning Academy Awards if and when “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” brings home the gold.
The critically acclaimed film abut the Alabama-born blues woman scored five nominations and could very well win for best actor and actress thanks to powerful performances from Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis.
Until then, we wanted to look back at some of Alabama’s biggest moments at the Oscars, for natives who won the big prize and for films set or shot in the state that either won or earned nominations. Dating back to the 1960s, the state holds connections to best picture winners and more, from “Forrest Gump” to “Get Out.”
