The controversial Kenya Roads (Amendment) Bill, 2021 that seeks to extend terms of Directors General (DGs) of the authorities from current three to five years, has kicked off a storm among lawmakers reading mischief. The Bill sponsored by the National Assembly Transport committee chairman David Pkosing (Pokot South) wants to amend Sections 13 and 14 of the Kenya Roads Act of 2007, on term of office of the DG and qualifications.

Twitter The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has defended itself over the traffic disruption on Mombasa Road, occasioned by the construction of the Nairobi Expressway. In a statement on Tuesday, May 18, the road agency assured that it was addressing some overbearing factors that had made traffic on the road worse due to the ongoing rains in the city. We have initiated drainage improvement works at locations such as Nyayo Stadium Roundabout to ensure the drainage remains free-flowing at all affected locations, KeNHA revealed. The agency noted the rains had created constrictions, as the relocation works in some instances, had interfered with the existing side drainage causing ponding of water along with certain locations on the road.

Scores feared dead as floods wreak havoc

THE STANDARD NATIONAL At least 11 people reportedly drowned and property worth millions of shillings destroyed in Machakos and Nairobi counties following heavy rains. The heaviest death toll was recorded in Machakos where six people were swept away by raging waters in three separate incidents on Thursday night. The first incident occurred at Itunduimuni seasonal river in Masinga location, where three people were swept away as they tried to cross the flooded river. Flooded Ombaka village in Nyando Kisumu county as a result of the backflow of Lake Victoria. Over 2,000 households have been displaced from the village. (Collins Oduor, Standard) Among them was a mother and her baby who were riding on a motorcycle when they were swept away by flood waters.

Twitter Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned of the closure of the main Mombasa highway to allow for the construction of Makupa Bridge valued at Ksh4.5 billion. In a statement to the press on Wednesday, May 12, Charles Njogu, assistant director corporate communication at KeNHA, confirmed that a diversion would be created to offer alternative route. He further noted that the team, which is currently engaging stakeholders, was yet to settle on a preferred diversion route. He revealed that the agency was looking at utilising the land adjacent to the route as the most viable section to construct the diversion routes for the project.
