Massachusetts community foundations get $5M in state COVID relief grants

The Baker administration Friday allocated an additional $5 million to charitable community foundations across the state to provide immediate relief from economic hardships for families and individuals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the last year the state has allocated a total of $15 million through the Community Foundations Grant Program for COVID-19 Relief.
Katie Allan Zobel, president and CEO of the Community Foundations of Western Massachusetts, said the $423,035 allocated to her organization Friday brings the agency’s total to more than $1.2 million since the first of the year.
“This is the first time that community foundations have received money from the state like this,” Zobel said. “That speaks to the urgent nature of the need. We have the resources to get the money to people with the greatest need.”
Health and community aid agencies across Central Massachusetts and just beyond have received more than $181,000 in grants from community foundations based in Fitchburg and Lowell.
The grants to 16 agencies were announced Monday by the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts and the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, whose combined Nashoba Valley Community Healthcare Fund provides annual funding to organizations, municipalities and agencies in 13 communities from Bolton to Westford to Ashby.

Kaplan Construction, a WBE general contractor and construction management firm providing comprehensive building programs across greater Boston, recently completed interior and exterior renovations and an addition to the Greater Lowell YMCA, 35 YMCA Drive.
Kaplan gutted approximately a third of the existing 45,000 square-foot building to update the YMCA for members, children and staff and increase capacity by 50%. New floors, walls, windows and lighting frame the modernized space, which features three preschool classrooms with dedicated toilet rooms, serving 60 children ages 2.9 to 5 years. A second entrance with separate access controls was built, offering families and staff increased security.
