BOONEVILLE, Miss. (AP) A community college in Mississippi is making it easier for students to take classes this summer.
Northeast Mississippi Community College plans to use money left over from COVID-19 relief funds to offer free tuition for all students, WCBI-TV reported.
The college s president, Dr. Ricky Ford, said the college was looking for ways to help students with federal dollars from the CARES Act, which established the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Colleges can only spend the money on COVID-related expenses.
“We purchased disinfecting equipment, masks, hand sanitizers, created situations where our classes would have spacing involved in it, so anything COVID related we have used to spend it on, then of the money given to each institution of higher education, a certain amount of that money, usually 50%, is required to go toward students,” Ford said.
SPRINGFIELD â Republicans in the General Assembly have introduced a new bill that would hand over the process of drawing new legislative and congressional district maps to an independent commission that would be required to use official Census Bureau, rather than survey estimates, to draw the maps.
The latest bill, introduced Tuesday as an amendment to Senate Bill 1325, mirrors a proposed constitutional amendment that was introduced in 2019. That proposal, which had 37 cosponsors, died in the 101st General Assembly without receiving a hearing.
Every 10 years, states redraw their legislative and congressional district maps to align with the most recent decennial census. That process is being complicated this year, as the census data needed to complete those tasks has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors.

Illinois K-12 school districts will receive $7 billion in federal funding to support students as they return to in-person learning, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced in a Wednesday news release.
Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and Evanston Township High School/School District 202 are expected to receive nearly $10.6 million and $3.7 million in funding respectively, according to a spreadsheet accompanying the news release. The funding comes through the American Rescue Plan and will be disbursed over the next three years.
“I’m committed to making sure that Illinois leads the nation in assisting schools to make this new $7 billion count over the next several years to overcome the pandemic’s effects on our students, parents and educators,” Pritzker said in the release.
