From a bombed-out Damascus suburb to the British seaside

URL copied to clipboard At the back of a sprawling set of garden allotments in Eastbourne, on England’s south coast, Mahmoud Al-Halabi gently pulls up two carrots for his children and gestures to a thick curtain of green vines. Parting the leaves he reveals several large bottle gourds, quite unlike anything growing in his neighbours’ plots. “In Syria, summer is longer, and these grow even bigger,” the 33-year-old says, waving admiration aside. The beans, peppers, and kusa (squash) he’s growing are other staples from that faraway climate. It’s been eight years since Al-Halabi and his family left their home in a pummelled suburb of Damascus, fleeing a conflict that has devastated their country.

We Art Our Heroes: Last chance to pay tribute to YOUR stars of lockdown

© Supplied by Handout One great picture was sent in by seven-year-old Cameron Lorimer, from Inverurie, who came up with his own superhero Super Sensei. Anna Reid, 13, from Elgin drew Jonathan Van-Tam who often appears with Prime Minister Boris Johnson at Covid-19 media briefings. Mr Van-Tam is one of many health professionals who has been working hard to keep the nation safe during the pandemic. And seven-year-old Sol Rennie, from Tarves, submitted a drawing of an NHS nurse during her work dressed in scrubs. © SYSTEM The We Art Heroes campaign received the backing of two artists working in the north-east. Both illustrator Johanna Basford OBE, who is renowned for her wildlife and flower-inspired adult colouring books, and artist and playwright Mel Shand have given it their full support.

Late Night Staring at High Res Pixels review – moreish frenemies drama

Last modified on Wed 3 Mar 2021 15.02 EST Everything about Late Night Staring at High Res Pixels is sleek and stylish apart from its ungainly title. Conceived for the stage but repurposed for online viewing, it resembles a Netflix series that knows just how to lure us in. It’s divided into 28 bite-size chunks of drama that were streamed in nightly episodes on the Finborough theatre’s YouTube channel earlier this year but can be watched in great big gulps now that the whole thing is online. Each part is seven to eight minutes long and while this might have felt too short and stuttering to build dramatic momentum, it is instantly moreish.
