76-year-old Jewish philanthropist from LA among world s top Olympic pin traders

Sidney Marantz boasts a collection of over 12,000 Olympic pins. (Courtesy of Marantz/ via JTA) JTA Sid Marantz loves tradition so much that he spent 20 years as a board member of his family’s Los Angeles synagogue. So it’s a big deal that he isn’t in Tokyo this week for the start of the Olympics, the first Summer Games he’s missed since 1984. Marantz usually attends for three weeks: the 16 days of the games with a few more days tacked onto the beginning and end to trade Olympic pins. The 76-year-old retired businessman and Jewish philanthropist is one of the world’s most committed pin traders, structuring his life around a subculture immortalized in “Boy Meets Curl,” a 2010 episode of “The Simpsons” in which Lisa Simpson becomes obsessed with collecting the year’s commemorative tchotkes.

My favorite Olympic bets for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning - VSiN Exclusive News - News

It was a disappointing walk-off loss for Team Israel against the Dominican Republic in Olympic baseball. I thought we were going to get a nice winner on the underdog there, but Joey Bautista and the Dominican Team had other ideas. Now, we are South Korea fans, since if you took my advice to bet South Korea to win the Gold Medal in baseball at 15-1 or 18-1, the good news is the odds were re-posted today at 4-1. Not exactly sure what was going on with books posting such big numbers on South Korea yesterday, maybe they forgot its double elimination? Either way, got a nice futures ticket in my pocket here and South Korea only needs to win twice (and can still lose once) to cash.
