Atlanta DJ spins records ⦠and bike wheels
A chance post on social media sent DJ Marsâs creativity into high gear.
ATLANTA - Clark Atlanta University graduate Marshall Thomas better known to audiences as DJ Mars knows how to get people moving. Touring with Kelis was huge … Keri Hilson, Monica, Ne-Yo. Essentially, I’m like the go-to DJ for the big R&B acts in Atlanta, he says.
But when the pandemic put the brakes on live touring in 2020, a chance post on social media sent the artist’s creativity into high gear. I bought two bikes that I customized myself, and they were my birthday gifts to myself, says the DJ. I posted the bikes on Instagram, like, ‘Hey I just did these bikes, they’re a gift to myself.’ And a buyer from the UK looked at one of the bikes and was like, ‘Hey, can I buy it?’

Georgia’s literary history is rich with remarkable women writers like Anne Rivers Siddons, Pearl Cleage, Flannery O’Connor, Tayari Jones, and Alice Walker. It’s no surprise that legacy carries into the metro’s brick-and-mortar bookshops.
1. The 2011 closure of Borders, one of Atlanta’s largest sellers of Black literature, left readers wanting. Five years later, Monique S. Hall started
Book Boutique as a pop-up at the Essence Music Festival to help fill that space. Now with an Atlantic Station location, the boutique has kept its festival vibe and added apparel and a cafe. Come for your next great read, stay for Taco Tuesday, Seafood Friday, weekend brunch, or a twice-a-month spoken-word poetry series. Expect new locations in Alpharetta, Augusta, and Charlotte, North Carolina, this year.
Fixes needed to Atlanta fire equipment
There are concerns over the repair time needed to put fire equipment back out into the streets.
ATLANTA - An Atlanta councilman says delays in fixing critical fire equipment decrease the margin of safety for firefighters to do their jobs.
Four ladder trucks as well as some engines are in the shop waiting on parts, repairs, or both. And one of those heavy trucks, used for rescues from the upper floors of dwellings, is supposed to serve Dustin Hillis’ northwest district.
In addition, for residents who live in the West End, Grant Park, or in Midtown near Atlantic Station, all those ladder trucks are also out of service and have been that way for several days. Some even longer.
