Pedestrian, 77, struck and killed trying to cross Atlantic City highway, cops say

A 77-year-old pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing Route 40 in Atlantic City on Tuesday night was going to attempt to climb over the concrete median barrier to cross the highway, authorities said.
The woman was hit on the eastbound side of the highway near mile marker 62.4 just before 9:30 p.m, according to Atlantic City police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police were still trying to find the woman’s family as of late Wednesday and her identity has not been released.

Boardwalk shop owner lied about robbery after fellow merchant’s death, police say

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small said a boardwalk store clerk charged with falsely claiming “young African American children” robbed his store did so as part of an ongoing issue involving merchants complaining about crime and calling for more policing of the boardwalk.
The clerk, Malik Awais, 26, of Egg Harbor Township, is facing charges of making a false report to police. He allegedly claimed individuals stole $100 in merchandise from H&A Fashions and caused over $5,000 worth of property damage something contradicted by surveillance footage, Deputy Chief James A. Sarkos said at a press conference the mayor held Wednesday.
After knifepoint robbery by 12-year-old, NJ shop owner dies: cops
ATLANTIC CITY A 12-year-old boy and young teen girl are facing charges, as police continue to search for other minors involved in a robbery at knifepoint that ended with a boardwalk shop owner’s death, according to law enforcement.
The 12-year-old and 14-year-old girl were arrested on Thursday evening as Atlantic City Police responded to a business in the 1500 block of the Boardwalk after reports of a group of teens damaging the store and assaulting individuals, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.
Shop owner, 66-year-old Mahmood Ansari, of Atlantic City, collapsed shortly after police arrived after 7:30 p.m. Ansari was given CPR by a bystander and officers before EMS arrived and took him to the hospital where he died, Tyner said.
