HENDERSON, Ky. Atkinson Pool in Henderson will be opened at some point before the end of June once an adequate number of lifeguards and support staff have been fully trained, according to a news release from the city.
The pool was originally planned to open on Memorial Day, but that did not happen due to a lack of applicants for lifeguard positions needed for safe operation. The pool was closed last summer as a COVID-19 precaution.
Previously, Parks Director Trace Stevens noted that there were only six applicants for lifeguard spots, while 15 lifeguards are needed. There was a plan in place to open the pool with only six lifeguards, but that plan would ve stretched staff to the point that more than one absence among the six on any given day would have necessitated closing the pool down.

HENDERSON, Ky. – Unless things change drastically in the next 10 days, the City of Henderson will not be able to open Atkinson Pool for the summer season as planned.
This time it’s not the pandemic standing in the way. It’s the lack of lifeguards and support employees to operate the pool. As of now there are not enough of either to open the pool safely.
The Parks Department had planned to open Atkinson Pool on Memorial Day weekend.
As of now, applications are still being accepted for lifeguarding positions and other positions at Atkinson Pool.
