The chair of the University of California board of regents said Wednesday he’s open to considering dramatic cuts in the number of armed, sworn police officers across the university system.
The comments by Regent John Pérez came during a panel on the future of campus policing co-hosted by CalMatters and KQED, in which the UC Student Association proposed decreasing armed officers on UC campuses by 40%.
“There’s room to have discussion about a significant reduction in policing on campuses,” Pérez said, adding, “I don’t think the 40% number is wildly out of the range of possibility.”
Around Town: RIPA report produces fascinating data

I am the son and son-in-law of career police officers. Both men – now deceased – served in a much different time and social environment than we have today. My dad never fired his gun or used his nightstick in 30 years. My father-in-law drew his gun once as an undercover vice squad officer in L.A. to protect his partner. Luckily, in his words, “The bad guy tripped before I could fire and slid right to me, and I cuffed him.” He counted it as a huge stroke of luck that he retired a month before the Rodney King incident.

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s “Color of Authority” series analyzed data from nearly 500,000 stops by the San Diego Police Department and San Diego County Sheriff’s Department of drivers and pedestrians and identified racial disparities, an important issue that deserves discussion and attention. But the report went on to conclude that these disparities resulted from racial bias in local law enforcement agencies, a finding that is not supported by the data and which disparages the character and integrity of the fine men and women who serve our community as San Diego County deputy sheriffs.
Disparities in policing outcomes begin with external factors found in our communities outside of law enforcement’s exclusive control, such as educational and employment opportunities, poverty, homelessness, access to physical and mental health care, and crime.
