Officials: Hacker steals identities of people killed in condo collapse Becky Sawtelle, Jay O Brien
If losing someone in the condo collapse in Surfside wasn t enough, someone is now stealing the identities of those killed.
Surfside s Mayor Charles Burkett confirmed to CBS 12 News that victims lost in the collapse are now the target of identity thieves.
He added there is an ongoing investigation. Unfortunately its quite common and we definitely see it after disasters, said Eva Velasquez, President and CEO of the non-profit Identity Theft Resource Center.
Velasquez says identity thieves often use information like names and birthdates from news reports and social media posts, combing that with tranches of available personal information for sale on the dark web.
