Red flag warning issued across NW Oregon, potential for rapidly spreading fire

Red flag warning issued across NW Oregon, potential for rapidly spreading fire Zach Urness, Salem Statesman Journal A red flag warning has been issued across the majority of northwest Oregon for Friday due to the potential for rapidly spreading fire amid hot, dry and windy conditions.  The warning is extremely rare for April, but with fuels bone-dry, humidity low and winds gusting from 25 to 50 mph in parts of the region, forecasters issued an alert that doesn t normally pop up until July or August.  The strongest winds are expected from late Friday morning into the evening.  Conditions are setting up the potential for rapidly spreading fires to get started, said John Bumgardner, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Portland. We do issue red flag warnings outside of the normal fire season occasionally, but this is very rare for April.

Large swaths of the 34,000-acre Opal Creek Wilderness and Recreation Area burned after historic winds turned a small fire into an inferno Labor Day night. The fire destroyed the bridge over Henline Creek the main access point from Salem and Portland. It also killed many of the trees, including old-growth giants, on Henline Falls, Little North Santiam and Opal Creek trails and in the surrounding area.

Oregon moves into coldest weather of winter, but will it snow in the Willamette Valley?

Oregon moves into coldest weather of winter, but will it snow in the Willamette Valley? Zach Urness, Salem Statesman Journal © CHERRILL CROSBY Wet snow blankets the backyard in Salem. The dreaded snowflake has started to appear on many Oregonians phones as the weather turns legitimately cold for the first time this winter.  The chill isn t anything noteworthy, with temperatures only dropping into the low 30s in the Willamette Valley over the coming week, but that does bring the potential for low-elevation snow, triggering the aforementioned snowflake on your iPhone.  In general, say meteorologists, snow in the valleys is unlikely over the weekend, but appears possible Monday and Tuesday, and then multiple times over next week.
