The season includes more than a half dozen productions and performers making their Sarasota debuts, though Bensel acknowledged that because she has “had to announce a number of these shows more than once that it feels like most are repeats.”
The schedule for the three series includes 19 different Broadway musicals, concerts and tribute programs, including the delayed arrivals of “Come From Away” and “Anastasia.” The full variety series will be announced in August.
“I feel like ‘Come From Away’ has been coming from away for a long time,” she said about the Tony Award-winning musical that was originally booked for the 2019-20 season, then postponed until Thanksgiving week this year.
During the last year, Quinn led a series of free digital programs featuring small, socially distanced ensembles performing from the Venice Performing Arts Center. President and CEO Christine Kasten said those programs reached a wide audience, but “there is nothing like the thrill of a live orchestra performance. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back safely to the concert hall in November.”
The organization’s 48th season will feature seven subscription series concerts leading up to “Songs From the Screen and Stage with Linda Eder,” a special program May 6-7.
It opens with “Brahms and The Boys” (Nov. 19-20) featuring Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor. Guest artist Thomas Hooten, principal trumpet for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major. The program also includes the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” and Bedrich Smetana’s overture from “The Bartered Bride.”

Even as questions about safety protocols remain to be determined, Asolo Repertory Theatre plans to return to a full season of indoor productions next season beginning with a fall staging of the tribal rock musical “Hair.”
In an online video Wednesday afternoon, Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards announced a lineup that is primarily filled with the same plays and musicals that were intended to be presented over the last two seasons but were canceled or postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
