The BJP-led Mitrajot seeks the retain power while the 10-party Mahajot led by Congress hopes to form the government. The counting of votes for 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam elections began at 8 a.m. May 2 across 331 halls amid “airtight” security and adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.

The counting of votes for 822 assembly seats across four states and union territory is underway. While Assam and West Bengal saw multiple phases of polling, electors in Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu cast their votes in a single phase on April 6.

The counting of votes began at 8 am on Sunday and will continue late into the night.
The Election Commission has banned victory roadshows and vehicle rallies.

Counting of votes for West Bengal Polls is underway. Visuals from a counting centre in Haldia of East Midnapore where votes in Haldia, Mahishadal and Nandigram are being counted.

Elated over the initial trends of Assam poll results, which showed that the BJP has an edge over its rivals, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday exuded confidence that the saffron party-led alliance will retain power in the state.
The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, trends available on the Election Commission website at 12.15 pm showed. People have blessed us. We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL, Mr Sonowal told reporters.

Assam Election Results: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears set to retain power in Assam as poll trends show the saffron party taking a decisive lead against rivals Congress, Badruddin Ajmal s AIUDF and others. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the people of state for keeping faith in the party. The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, latest trends available on the Election Commission website said. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL, Sonowal said. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested 92 seats and its alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad on 26 seats. On the other hand, the Congress contested 94 seats, whereas Badruddin Ajmal s AIUDF fielded candidates on 14 seats.

With the ruling BJP-led alliance in Assam set to form the government for the second consecutive term, Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday said the assembly poll has broken the jinx that minorities do not vote for the saffron party as it has received huge support in the Muslim dominated areas and constituencies.
He hoped that in the second term of governance, Assam will, along with the entire north eastern region, emerge as a leading player in the post-COVID economy and growth for not only the north east but of the whole of India.
