Guwahati: Assam minister Himata Biswa Sarma has branded the upcoming Assembly elections in the state to be a polarised contest and blamed the Congress-All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) pre-poll alliance for making the poll battle a conflict of civilisations .
He added the elections would have been fought on the plank of development had the Grand Old Party contested separately. By forging an alliance with communal party Congress has polarised the election. Had Congress contested separately, polls would have been fought on development issues. But by aligning with AIUDF, the Congress has made this poll a conflict of civilizations, Sarma told news agency ANI.

Guwahati, Feb 22 : The separatist United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) says it has ‘deferred action’ against two employees of hydrocarbon company Quippo Oil & Gas Infrastructure Ltd who were kidnapped in December by their armed cadres.
ULFA ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Barua called some journalists, including this writer, to inform that ‘expiry of ultimatum does not mean death penalty.’
Barua, who often calls up journalists to spin publicity mileage, said “the ULFA has taken into account appeals made by Assamese civil society and leading citizens seeking release of the two Quippo employees”.
