The chiefs of Owabi and Odaso in the Ashanti Region have been summoned by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to explain the pollution of the Oda and Owabi Rivers by illegal mining and real estate activities.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was visibly unhappy about the development, could not fathom why the chiefs in these two catchment areas would allow the pollution of these water bodies, which provide safe drinking water for an appreciable number of people in the region.
The Asantehene gave the order when the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, and her deputy Minister-designate, Alhaji Amidu Chinnia, visited to pay a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, and also furnished Otumfuo with a report of threat of galamsey and real estate activities to the Oda and Owabi Rivers.

May 19, 2021 Ms Dapaah and other dignitaries inspects Birim River
The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Ms Cecilia Dapaah, has called on stakeholders to support the President to stop illegal mining in the country.
According to her, the activities of the illegal miners were not only destroying water bodies but treatment plants placed at river banks to refine water for distribution to the citizenry.
“It is sad to note the devastation these illegal miners have caused to the water bodies. It is amazing that all their activities are close to treatment plants purchased with money to refine the water for us and we need all stakeholders and everyone to help the President to stop this menace immediately,” she said.

The Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has underscored the need for Ghanaians to respect nature to ensure their communities and traditional areas were clean and healthy.
“In the olden days, our mothers will wake up around 4:00 a.m., and sweep the compound; there was nothing like dumping of refuse into the gutters, and for that matter, our gutters were clean and tidy,” he recounted.
However, he said it was regrettable that Ghanaians had brushed aside these good values and were rather dumping refuse into gutters and polluting water bodies, lamenting that now there was no longer respect for the rule of law.
