For a solitary species, nothing may be better than the fresh air of independence, and thanks to the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity in Cambodia, two Indian civet kittens are now living that dream. Witness their first moments of freedom in this video of their release back into the wild jungle.
Indian civet cats are protected in many areas of South and Southeast Asia, where they are native, but they are not safeguarded in Cambodia, where these kittens were found orphaned after their mother was killed by hunters. Unfortunately, it isn’t uncommon for these animals to be trapped and killed for the wild meat trade, which is largely responsible for their declining population numbers.

Second Irrawaddy dolphin calf seen in Mekong River

A six-day-old Irrawaddy dolphin calf was spotted among four adults at Kampi Resort along the Mekong River in Kratie province on the evening of March 5, World Wildlife Fund-Cambodia said via Facebook.
Researchers from the Fisheries Administration and WWF-Cambodia lit up with elation at the scene of the second dolphin calf recorded this year, following a sighting of a week-old calf at a natural sanctuary in Stung Treng province late last month.
“The current events represent one of the most encouraging encounters by the research team as part of their dolphin monitoring and photo-ID based surveys,” WWF-Cambodia said.

On a bright Sunday morning in Siem Reap, I jump in the back of a
remorque for an excursion into the countryside of northwestern Cambodia. Riding along with me in the motorcycle-pulled cart is an effervescent tour guide named Mony Leap and a couple of her clients. A rural road takes us past tidy farmhouses and rice fields glimmering with wet-season rain, the bucolic scenery tarnished only by the belching exhaust of trucks as they overtake us. This is my first trip to the village of Preah Dak since moving to Siem Reap 18 months ago; itâs also the first time that Leap, who grew up in the surrounding Banteay Srei district during the Khmer Rouge years, has led a tour there.
