JOHANNESBURG - Mango Airline staff on Friday said that they were going into weekend talks extremely frustrated with no clarity on whether they’d get their salaries from the cash-strapped carrier.
The state-owned airline is still waiting to hear from the Public Enterprises Department about exactly when it will receive a cash injection from government.
On Wednesday, all Mango s flights across the country were suspended for almost a full day due to outstanding debt. However, it managed to make a partial payment to Airports Company South Africa.

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) An attack by gunmen in Burkina Faso’s north this week has killed at least 18 people and severely injured one, the government said.
The attack Monday evening in Yattakou village in the Sahel region’s Seno area has also caused many residents to flee, said Salfo Kabore, the Sahel region’s governor in a statement.
The attack happened the same day that two Spanish journalists and an Irish conservationist were killed and a Burkinabe soldier went missing when their anti-poaching patrol was ambushed by jihadists in the country’s east.
UPDATE: Mango resumes flight as ACSA feud ends
It seems that Mango can take to the skies yet again, as the airline has seemingly resolved a dispute with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) over a fees payment issue. According to Bloomberg, the low-cost arm of SAA came to an agreement with ACSA to make “a part-payment on what it owes and commit to ways to settle the remaining debt.” Bloomberg reports that the brief grounding is an indication of Mango’s “deteriorating financial position” – a sign of the struggling aviation industry amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. – Jarryd Neves
Mango resumes flights as feud with South Africa airports ends
Mango forced to suspend flights after missing payments to ACSA
SAA’s low-cost airline, Mango, has been forced to halt all flights after failing to pay Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the airport regulator. While the company didn’t respond to Bloomberg, an apology tweet was published on the company’s Twitter account (see below), saying Mango is “working on a solution”. The coronavirus lockdown saw all flights grounded for a long time, bad news for many of the already struggling airlines. SAA, which is currently going through business rescue, has been struggling for years now. Comair – which operates Kulula and the SA-arm of British Airways – “was put into a local form of bankruptcy protection in May last year before resuming flights with support from lenders and investors”. – Jarryd Neves
