AKWESASNE The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne released its unofficial election results this after Saturday’s election to determine who the next grand chief, and district chiefs, will be.
Grand Chief Abram Benedict finished with a healthy lead over his only competitor Marlon Johnson, with 766 total votes out of 979.

In the previous election in 2018, Johnson scored about 12 per cent of the total vote, which increased to over 21 per cent this time. Benedict’s greatest support was in Kawehno:ke, where he served as the district chief for three terms, and where he won over 81 per cent of the total vote.

A long-standing educational tradition revved back to life this week after an extended pandemic pit stop.
On Thursday morning, it was time for the Virtual Racing Against Drugs event, the English-language edition, with 2,000 local students tuning in and watching a series of presentations – something that used to go on with various exhibits set up at the Cornwall Armoury.

“It’s a great initiative, a partnership (involving many) community organizations,” said show host Gabriel Riviere-Reid, who introduced a variety of presenters, appearing in short videos, the common thread being awareness of many drug and alcohol-related issues.
