US Army General Stephen Townsend, commander, US Africa Command, conducted a two-day visit to Ghana, between 23 and 24 February, in what was Townsend’s first visit to the country, where he met with Ghanaian leaders and US Embassy personnel in Accra.
“Ghana is an African security leader and a key partner of US Africa Command. Ghana’s peacekeeping contributions, protection of vital sea lanes in the Gulf of Guinea, and leadership help prevent the advancement of violent extremism. I look forward to exploring ways we can continue to deepen our partnership,” he said.
Townsend met with several Ghanaian leaders, including President Nana Akufo-Addo; Chief of Defence Staff, including both current and immediate past Chiefs of Defence Staff Rear Admiral Seth Amoama and Lieutenant General Obed Akwa, respectively; Minister of Defence, the Honorable Dominic Nitiwul; and other senior members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The U.S. military hit Iran-backed militants in Syria with retaliatory airstrikes near the Iraq-Syria border at about 2 a.m. local time. The Pentagon called the strikes a direct response to the recent rocket attack that killed a contractor and wounded six others in northern Iraq on Feb. 15.
