(KFVS) - Historic buildings in the Heartland have a lot of stories attached to them.
Sometimes those stories are lost if the buildings aren’t maintained.
Downtown Cape Girardeau is home to many historic buildings. Some still stand, but others are just a memory.
“Each one tells its own story about a certain time in the city’s history and so once a building is lost, that story is lost as well,” said Cape Girardeau’s City Planner Ryan Shrimplin.
ROCK SPRINGS Dinosaurs are taking over Downtown Rock Springs this summer.
Dubbed “downtown-osaurs,” the ten characters were created by local artists Don and Kaye Tyler. The Downtown-osaurs, like Timmy the Pterodactyl, and Titan the T-Rex, will take up residency at various locations around Downtown throughout the summer.
To kick off the summer theme, the Broadway Theater will be showing
Disney’s Dinosaur movie at 2 pm on Thursday, June 3. Admission is free, but seating is limited.

Following the movie, everyone is invited to go on a scavenger hunt to find each Downtown-osaur. Upon finishing the scavenger hunt, participants can stop in the Rock Springs Main Street/URA office at 603 S Main Street for a special Downtown-osaur button. The scavenger hunt sheets also contain a variety of dino-facts.
City of Cape Girardeau
The City of Cape Girardeau s Historic Preservation Commission is out with its 2021 endangered building list.
The list is highlighted by the Esquire Theater on Broadway, which closed in 1984, and on the same block, the Broadway Theatre, which was damaged by a fire in March.
The list also includes a three-story, U-shaped apartment building on Bellevue Street, which was built in 1913 and is believed to be the oldest apartment building in Cape Girardeau. And Juden School on Cape Rock Drive, built in 1854 and closed in 1960.
The goal of the list is to raise awareness of these buildings in the hopes that they may be saved.
A petition to save a Deptford leisure pool has reached over 3000 signatures in eight days, after the council revealed that they had no plans to reopen it.
