Germany needs immigration. Language is key to integration. For years, politicians and academics have argued about what to call immigrants and their descendants. Now there s a new proposal.
For 15 years now, the term used by German statisticians and politicians alike to denote foreigners and their descendants has been people with a migration background.
That was the label given to people who weren t born into German citizenship. And to people whose mothers or fathers were not born German citizens. Today, that applies to a quarter of the population.
After two years of discussing how Germany could better acknowledge its status as a society of immigration, a specialist commission of 24 politicians and academics appointed by the government has submitted its report to Chancellor Angela Merkel. 116 refugees who had been living in Greek camps flew into the German city of Hanover on Wednesday, February 17. The group was composed of 53 adults and 63 children.
26 family groups of refugees have arrived in Germany, the German interior ministry said in a press release on Wednesday. The 53 adults and 63 children have already been granted refugee status by the Greek authorities, continued the press release.

The net number of migration to Germany continued to tumble in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic was cited as a chief reason for the decline in numbers, which now has fallen to merely a third of the legally permitted numbers.

Last year, Germany granted far fewer family reunifications for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection than would have been possible by legal means. However, according to a Left Party politician, this isn t entirely the fault of the COVID-19 lockdown.
A total of 5,311 relatives of beneficiaries of subsidiary protection have been granted visas to come to Germany under the family reunification program. This was reported as the response of the federal government to a parliamentary question submitted by the Left Party in the Bundestag (German Parliament) earlier.
In the fall of 2018, the German government had agreed that up to 1,000 people could join their families each month, capping the quota at 12,000 per year.

Germany s asylum office has moved away from its restrictive practice against church asylum. The introduced changes pertain to the time limits within which responsibility for an asylum seeker would move to Germany from other EU countries. The obstacles to church asylum had previously been so high that help for hardship cases was made nearly impossible.
Germany s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has changed course in regards to how it deals with church asylum cases, a spokesperson for BAMF confirmed on Thursday (January 14) in a reply to a request by the news agency
