Customs and Border Protection, the agency that oversees the Border Patrol, has carried out more than 630,000 expulsions in the past year. As The Intercept detailed in an investigation published last weekend, Border Patrol agents have used Title 42 as a basis to drop asylum-seekers in Mexican border towns in the middle of the night a practice that’s been largely prohibited for years under agreements between the U.S. and Mexico. The agents have also relied on Title 42 to expel individuals and families through remote ports that were previously not used for removals, into communities dominated by organized crime and without transportation services. M Stan Reaves/Shutterstock With just over a week to go before the end of the Trump Administration, immigration advocates filed a federal lawsuit in the Washington, D.C. district court against a Department of Justice rule they claim would create “devastating” new barriers to those with cases in immigration court. The rule, which was announced in December, is set to take effect on Friday. It is being challenged by five immigration advocacy organizations around the country, including Brooklyn Defender Services.

Joy Baynes and Lauren Dasse  The Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona has chosen two recipients for this year’s Laura Penny Community Impact Awards—Joy Baynes and Lauren Dasse. Baynes, a nurse-practitioner at El Rio Community Health Center, was recognized for her work in healthcare with an emphasis on at-risk youth and her dedication to women’s reproductive rights. She is responsible for developing El Rio’s Reproductive Health Access Project and when Baynes gives her two cents, it’s worth $38 in change.  “Joy is passionately compassionate, clinically excellent, and a tireless advocate for the marginalized and disenfranchised in our community,” wrote Joy Mockbee, who nominated Baynes for the award.
