COLUMBIA, Md. and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/ What’s fueling the massive ejection of gas and dust out of the Cigar galaxy, otherwise known at Messier 82?
We know that thousands of stars bursting into existence are driving a powerful super-wind that’s blowing matter into intergalactic space. New research shows that magnetic fields are also contributing to the expulsion of material from Messier 82, a well-known example of a starburst galaxy with a distinctive, elongated shape.

NASA Highlights Astrophysics Missions at ‘Super Bowl of Astronomy’
Experts from across NASA will discuss topics ranging from black holes to exploding stars to planets beyond our solar system at the 237th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS). The weeklong virtual event begins Monday, Jan. 11.
The event, nicknamed the Super Bowl of Astronomy, will feature agency leaders and researchers discussing the latest developments in astrophysics during various news conferences, scientific sessions, and online exhibits, as well as town halls, including those focused on NASAs Webb and Roman space telescopes.
News conferences will livestream and will be available to the public on the AAS YouTube channel. Among the myriad new studies of the universe that will be presented, researchers will discuss a new finding from Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, a NASA-funded citizen science project in which members of the public can collaborate with professional scientists in identifyin
A new ‘atlas’’
The experts at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia‘s national science agency, have created a new atlas of the universe.
Experts at the agency have mapped three million galaxies with more details and in a record time of 300 hours, in comparison to previous mappings which have taken years.
Water on moon!
NASA has confirmed the presence of water on the sunlit surface of the Moon. This discovery indicates that water may be distributed across the lunar surface.
NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) has detected water molecules (H2O) in Clavius Crater, one of the largest craters visible from Earth, located in the Moon’s southern hemisphere.

The mesmerising image depicts magnetic fields in galaxy NGC 1068 or M77, streamlining over visible light and X-ray composite image of the galaxy from the Hubble Space Telescope
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Tuesday captured the magnetic fingerprint of a galaxy across 24,000 light-years.
The mesmerising image depicts magnetic fields in galaxy NGC 1068 or M77, streamlining over visible light and X-ray composite image of the galaxy from the Hubble Space Telescope, NuSTAR or the Nuclear Spectroscopic Array, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
NGC 1068 appears to have a complex inner structure. This galaxy is basically analogous to NGC 4736 (M94) showing a strikingly similar overall morphology. The extended outer disk shows signs of interaction and misalignment, probably a result of a recent bombardment.
