Getting her first dose of the coronavirus vaccine meant a lot to Lelia Clark, 77. She is one of the 55,916 Black people who have been vaccinated in Florida as of Wednesday, Jan. 20, compared to 710, 885 white people.
Black lawmakers in Florida are trying to dispel disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. A December survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found 35% of Black adults say they will probably or definitely not get the COVID-19 vaccine. The latest Florida Department of Health numbers shows the percent of Black Floridians vaccinated so far is in the single digits.
The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit healthcare policy group. About half of Black adults it surveyed who say they will probably or definitely not get a vaccine say they are worried they ll get COVID-19 from the vaccine. The initial shipment of 19,500 does of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was immediately placed into super cold freezers. A group of nine healthcare workers at the hospital system were the first to receive the vaccine later Tuesday. The initial group of nine to receive the shot included an emergency room physician, an ICU nurse, and a service worker who said being included in the initial rollout was humbling. Jackson Health s initial share of the vaccine arrived a days after three other hospital systems - Memorial Regional in Broward, UF Health in Jacksonville and Tampa General - received their first doses.

COVID-19 vaccines arrived in hospitals across the nation on Monday, including some in Florida.
The first Florida dose is believed to have happened at UF Health in Jacksonville. However, Governor Ron DeSantis spoke from Tampa General Hospital shortly after as they distributed their first dose to a frontline nurse.

The first coronavirus vaccine at Tampa General Hospital is given on Monday morning.
The Governor called the vaccine arrival a significant milestone, adding there will be 100,000 doses total across five Florida hospitals by Tuesday. The other hospitals are in Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Hollywood.

After the FDA s approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine last week, Florida got their first shipment Monday. The COVID-19 vaccinations went to Memorial Regional in Broward, Tampa General Hospital, and UF Health in Jacksonville.
During a news conference Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that Jackson Memorial in Miami and Advent Health in Orlando will receive their initial share of the vaccine on Tuesday. During that same news conference, a 31-year-old nurse at Tampa General became the first to receive the vaccine in the state.
