Lubbock breaks ground on new downtown police headquarters

Construction is underway on the new police headquarters in downtown Lubbock. The headquarters is yet another component in the city s Public Safety Improvements Project, which was approved by the city council in 2017. The $60 million Public Safety Improvements Project includes three new police patrol division stations, a new municipal court, police property warehouse and the new headquarters. The patrol division station located near 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is expected to be occupied next month. The others one in south Lubbock near 140th Street and Indiana Avenue and the other in north Lubbock on Erskine Street near Frankford Avenue will open later this year.

Final suspect in Lubbock teen s shooting death surrenders to police Lubbock police officials said Wednesday that the final suspect in a June 9 fatal shooting at a Central Lubbock apartment complex has surrendered to authorities and is in custody. The 16-year-old boy is the last of seven teenagers arrested in connection with the shooting death of 14-year-old Dequavion Traylor during a drug rip at the Ella Apartments in the 1100 58th Street. All seven are facing a charge of murder for their roles in the shooting. The ages of the suspects range from 15-17 years old. Lubbock police Sgt. Justin Anderson said the final suspect was apprehended at an attorney s office in Lubbock.

He can be reached at jack.becker@ttu.edu. Today’s article is by Monte Monroe, Ph.D. He is an archivist at the Southwest/Special Collection Library on the campus of Texas Tech University. On May 11, 2021, the mayor and city council officially recognized the Lubbock Police Department for 100 years of service, hosting a public exhibit in the lobby of Citizens Tower and by proclamation. The LPD’s growth followed patterns of cities elsewhere during nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sheriffs, night watchmen, and city marshals addressed law enforcement during the early years, as well as after Lubbock’s incorporation in 1909. City marshal’s duties ranged from maintaining peace and preventing accidents between automobiles and horses.
