Ansham Associates have added a 148m² extension to an existing clapboarded house for its interior designer client.

The existing timber-framed house, which is painted white with green shuttered windows, was originally built in the late 19th century for the managing officers of a nearby brickworks.
The extension s massing is informed by the scale, height and proportions of the existing but contrasts the ‘hand-crafted’ style with a façade that is more ‘assembled’.

The London-based studio has transformed an Edwardian semi-detached house into a Postmodern family home with extension topped in fake Disneyland mountain scenery
The colourful home for CAN s director and his family also takes cues from theatre sets, geography and an Edwardian bread plate.

The rear s extension mountain roofscape is directly inspired by images of the Matterhorn Bobsleds ride at Disneyland in California, which CAN director Mat Barnes describes as a ‘surreal mountain top aloft a skeletal frame’.

The latest in the AJ’s series looking at architects who have saved buildings from the bulldozers or brought them back to life
To reduce carbon emissions from the construction industry, the default option for any project should be to adapt and reuse an existing building, one of the key demands of the AJ’s RetroFirst campaign. Our ongoing series seeks to celebrate the projects that save buildings from ruin or demolition and to hear from the architects that designed them.
