Plans to replace Australia s much-loved but decades-old scientific base on Macquarie Island in the sub-Antarctic have been shelved, with a team of tradies en route to the island this week to begin renovating the site.
The base is usually home to around 20 scientists and researchers but is host to a range of occupational health and safety issues and environmental contamination.
The seven year project will see some buildings decommissioned and others refurbished.
