Fire burns through detached garage in southeast Fresno

It happened shortly after 3:00 am at a home on Woodrow and Grove Avenues.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the structure. The blaze started in a detached garage that was converted into an apartment.
The residents heard their smoke detector go off and were able to get out of the house safely.
No one was hurt.
Officials are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Originally from Texas, Woodard Sr. moved to Fresno at 10 years old. It was while playing college football he saw a job opening at the Fresno Fire Department and reached out to a family friend with the department. Their conversation would spark a career.
Fresno Fire helps with drive-by birthday celebration for World War II veteran

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) A World War II veteran is celebrating his 95th birthday with family and first responders.
Seaman First Class Carlos Acosta DeTevis was all smiles as he got a special drive-by to commemorate his big day.
His daughter, Claudia, drove down from Wyoming but wanted some lights and sirens to make the celebration extra special, so Fresno Fire department made it happen.
The Navy Veteran spent two years serving on the U.S.S. Loyalty.
