As council braces for a heated debate Monday on dropping the residential speed limit from 50 to 40 km/h, Mayor Drew Dilkens is pitching an alternative approach to preventing cars from bombing through neighbourhoods.
“I want to do something that actually makes a difference and I don’t believe reducing the posted speed limit to 40 is going to be a sufficient deterrent. I really don’t think it’s going to work,” Dilkens said on Tuesday, in advance of Monday’s meeting when a very close vote is expected on the proposed blanket speed limit drop on residential streets. It would cost around $734,000 to implement, largely to erect signs on the many arterial roads where the 50 km/h limit would remain. Council has assured Southwood Lakes residents their deteriorating ornamental lamp posts will be replaced on a “like-for-like” basis, after outrage erupted in the subdivision over talk they might be getting standard poles.
“There is no doubt decorative lighting enhances a subdivision like this and the residents absolutely deserve like-for-like replacement,” Mayor Drew Dilkens said Monday, as council dealt with a recommendation from one of its standing committees to defer replacing the Southwood Lakes lamp posts until a citywide policy on replacing decorative lamp posts could be developed.

Local landlords are warning a rental licensing system would have dire consequences for themselves and their tenants, while doing nothing about the unsafe living conditions it’s meant to eradicate.
“They think it’s a waste of money and it’s going to put pressure on their tenants,” said lawyer Steven Pickard, speaking for the Windsor Landlord Association. It’s those tenants, he said Friday who will end up “unfairly” having to shoulder the cost of annual licences passed on to them in their rents.
